FF/Paramedic DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

 

  1. Certified as a paramedic by the Pennsylvania Department of Health to:

    • Perform pulmonary ventilation by the use of oral, nasal, endotracheal or tracheostomy intubation

    • Insert, in peripheral veins, intravenous catheters, needles, or other cannulae-IV lines

    • Obtain venous blood samples for analysis, but only for diagnostic and treatment purposes

    • Prepare and administer approved medication and solutions by intravenous, intramuscular, subcutaneous, intraosseous, oral, sublingual, topical, inhalation, rectal or endotracheal routes

    • Perform defibrillation and synchronized cardioversion

    • Perform gastric suction by nasogastric or orogastric intubation

    • Insert nasogastric or orogastric tubes

    • Visualize the airway by use of the laryngoscope and remove foreign bodies with forceps

    • Apply electrodes and monitor cardiac electrical activity including electrocardiograms

    • Perform vagal maneuvers

    • Use mechanical cardiopulmonary resuscitation devices

    • Assess and manage patients in accordance with the EMT-paramedic training curriculum approved by the Pennsylvania Department of Health

    • Perform thoracic decompression

    • Perform cricothyrotomy and pulmonary ventilation

    • Perform central venous and intraosseous cannulation

    • Perform external transthoracic pacing

    • Access central venous lines and subcutaneous indwelling catheters

    • Perform all other ALS services that may be authorized by Pennsylvania Department of Health approved regional EMS council transfer and medical treatment protocols

  2. Possess and maintain a current, valid Pennsylvania driver’s license

  3. Drive, operate and care for assigned apparatus/vehicle

  4. Maintain, clean, and care for assigned station

  5. Participate in training for fire, hazardous materials, and related emergency services as directed and authorized by the city

  6. Participate or assist in emergency and non-emergency operations as may be required, relating to fire, emergency medical, hazardous materials and other related services

  7. Assist in public safety education programs

  8. Pursuant to Act 82, must remain current in continuing education as required by the Department of Health, or the medical director

  9. Pursuant to Act 82, must maintain all certifications, in addition to those required by the state, EMS region, or the medical director

  10. For continued employment, must remain on Eastern PA Regional full medical command with medical director endorsement

  11. Maintain a working knowledge of all fire department General Orders, Standard Operating Procedures, Rule and Regulations, and any other directives or policies concerning the work force

Firefighter/EMT DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. As directed by the Fire Chief.
  2. Maintains, cleans and cares for assigned fire station.
  3. Participates in training for fire, emergency medical, hazardous-materials and related emergency services as directed and authorized by the City.
  4. Drives, operates and cares for assigned apparatus and equipment
  5. Participates or assists in emergency and non-emergency operations as may be required, relating to fire, emergency medical, hazardous-materials and other related services, including fire-fighting; driving apparatus; operating pumps, aerial ladders/platforms, cascade systems; treating of sick or injured persons within the scope of certified skills, identification of and containment/management of hazardous-materials, storm and water removal services; medical assists; assists to Police Department for Fire Department related services; vehicle rescue and extrication; light and heavy rescues; and other services which may be required of the Department of Fire & Rescue Services or ordered by the Fire Chief or his Deputies.
  6. Performs fire hydrant surveys and inspections in accordance with past practice.
  7. Participates in pre-fire planning surveys and inspections.
  8. Assists in fire prevention and/or public fire safety education programs and related duties.
  9. Will possess and maintain without suspension or revocation thereafter, a valid Class I Pennsylvania Bureau of Motor Vehicles driver’s license and a card of certification of authorization to operate Fire Department vehicles requiring Class 2 or 3 licenses as pursuant to the Act of February 15, 1980, No. 8 amending Title 75 (Vehicles) of the Pennsylvania Consolidated Statues, as issued by the Fire Chief.
  10. Will act professional and respectful at all times to Officers, other career and volunteer members and the general public.
  11. Maintain a working knowledge of all Fire Department General Orders, Standard Operating Procedures, Rules and Regulations, and any other directives concerning the work force.
  12. Carries out all other duties and functions as assigned by the Fire Chief or his Deputies.

Requirements

  1. Applicants applying must possess a high school diploma or equivalent GED at the time of applications deadline.
  2. Applicant must be 18 years old at the time of application deadline.
  3. Applicant must have valid PA driver’s license at time of application, and maintain such throughout employment.
  4. Applications must be notarized and submitted in person by applicant by the deadline stated.
  5. Applicant must submit a medical release form from a physician at the time of the physical agility test. Applicants showing up at the agility test without the form will not be permitted to take the agility test, and will be removed from the test.
  6. Passing grade on written exam is considered 75% or higher.
  7. Weight of written exam shall be 60%.
  8. Weight of oral exam shall be 40%.
  9. Veteran’s points will be added after composite score is comprised.
  10. Points given to veterans providing required form shall be 10 points.
  11. Veteran’s points cannot be used to obtain a passing grade of 75%.
  12. Only top 50 applicant written scores will advance to agility test.
  13. Oral exams will be given to only those who have passed the agility test.
  14. Applicants offered employment must pass a criminal background check including child abuse background check.
  15. Applicants offered employment must pass a thorough physical/medical exam.
  16. Felony records disqualify an applicant.
  17. Hired applicants will sign a memo of understanding committing to minimum of 2 years of employment.
