Under direct supervision of an Emergency Treatment Center staff physician and/or Emergency Treatment Center Nurse Manager/designee, assists with basic emergency patient care services in the Emergency Treatment Center.



 1. Assists registered nurses, physicians and physician assistants in the delivery of patient care, with regard to patient condition and age.

 2. Performs patient care related to oxygen therapy and monitoring, cardiac monitoring (acquiring and interpreting 12-lead EKGs, cardioversion and defibrillation), vital signs, specimens (i.e. blood, urine or sputum) and properly packaging and sending to specimen control.

 3.  Initiates IVs and venipuncture samples as well as bedside glucose monitoring.

 4.  Assists with hemorrhage control, spinal immobilization and splinting.

 5.   Under the direction of a medical doctor, registered nurse, or physician assistant administers routine oral, rectal, sublingual, nasal, topical, otic, ophthalmic, inhalation, intraosseous and injectable medications not requiring a high level of skill or nursing judgment; administers ACLS emergency IV medications.

 6. Provides psychological support to the patient and family based on assessed needs.

 7. Notifies Nurse Manager/designee of any pertinent changes in patient condition or disposition; report unusual incidents, complaints or concerns to Nurse Manager    or designee, as appropriate.

8.  Performs related and routine clerical tasks pursuant to performing the aforementioned duties.

 9. Other duties as assigned.



 1. Graduation from high school, and

 2.  Current paramedic certification by the Iowa Department of Public Health, Bureau of Emergency Medical Services, and

3.  Current course completion card in Basic Cardiac Life Support for Healthcare Provider by the American Heart association, and

4. Current course completion card in Advanced Cardiac Life Support by the American  Heart Association, and

5. Minimum one (1) year advanced life support field experience as an emergency response paramedic, or current ER experience with a history of advanced life support field experience.

Prefer applicants with PS/PM paramedic certification.  Perfer applicants with the following certifications:  Pre-hospital Trauma Life Support (PHTLS); Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS); Critical Care Paramedic (CCP); Advanced Medical Life Suppport (AMLS).  Prefer applicants with Associate's Degree/Paramedic.
