Baltimore, MD - The Maryland Institute for Emergency Medical Services Systems (MIEMSS) is seeking an Executive Director. Considered the birthplace of EMS and home to the “Father of Trauma Medicine”, R Adams Cowley, M.D., MIEMSS has influenced and shaped EMS throughout the country for decades. 

MIEMSS oversees and coordinates all components of the statewide EMS system in accordance with Maryland statute and regulation. This includes planning, operations, evaluation, and research. In addition, MIEMSS provides leadership and medical direction, conducts and supports EMS educational programs, operates and maintains a statewide communications system, designates trauma and specialty centers, licenses and regulates commercial ambulance services, and participates in EMS-related public education and prevention programs. 

The Executive Director is the administrative head of MIEMSS, an independent state agency, and provides administrative support for the EMS Board which is responsible for coordination of Maryland’s statewide EMS system and for development of the statewide EMS Plan. This important position coordinates and oversees the State’s five EMS regions; the planning and operation of EMS with the federal, state, and county governments; the training, certification, and licensure of EMS providers; research and education related to EMS; emergency and specialty referral centers and systems for the treatment of emergency/critically ill or injured patients. 

The successful candidate will be a respected leader and visionary in EMS and be a board certified physician with demonstrated excellence and experience in managing an EMS system. He/She would be experienced in developing a strategic vision and taking action to achieve agency/system goals and solve complex problems. He/She would possess excellent communication and interpersonal skills including a demonstrated history of promoting collaboration, teamwork and coalition-building. Finally, he/she would be experienced with government and legislative processes have demonstrated experience in EMS-related education and research and be dedicated to ensuring the State of Maryland remains a leader in emergency medical care.
