Colorado West Emergency Physicians L.L.C.

EMS Medical Director/ ED physician Position

Grand Junction, Western Colorado

Colorado West Emergency Physicians is looking for a qualified individual to join our single hospital democratic group: taking over medical direction of the Mesa County EMS System, and staffing a half-time ED position at our busy referral Level 2 Trauma designated St. Mary’s Hospital.

The Opportunity:

One Medical Director oversees all licensed ambulance services in Mesa County by 2004 Ordinance. CWEP has continuously held the contract for EMS medical direction since inception.

The EMS Medical Director is paid by CWEP. Two other physicians in our group assist with education and probationary medic reviews.

The Medical Director contact is overseen by the Mesa County Emergency Manager, who works under the Sheriff. The county also provides an EMS coordinator to help with the data management and perform ambulance inspections.

  • One set of protocols for all County licensed ambulances

  • One PSAP – GJRCC which uses MPDS

  • Only Delta calls run lights and sirens response

  • Aggressive protocols with ASA and PAIs in place

  • Working toward accreditation

  • Previously used High Plains ePCR system, switching to Image Trend in January 2018.

Four hospitals in Mesa County currently have representation from EMS on QA committees at each hospital (except VA) and from each hospital on EMS QA Council with great working relationships.

  • St. Mary’s Hospital and Medical Center (Home Location for Director)

  • Community Hospital – Level 3 Trauma, no PCI

  • Colorado Canyons Medical Center – Level 5 trauma, minimal services

  • Grand Junction VA Hospital

Grand Junction Fire Department is a full time paid service which handles a bulk of the areas calls. They also do most interfaculty transports in The Grand Valley.

  • AHA Gold STEMI care for the last three years

  • EMS Supervisors on every shift

Agencies also run from busy (Clifton Fire takes an average of 3,000 calls per year) to very rural (Gateway-Unaweep takes an average of 60 calls per year) with mixed volunteer and paid positions. All agencies are ALS except one.

This position also has the chance to work with St. Mary’s CareFlight, which has two helicopters, a fixed wing aircraft, and a CCT ambulance. This program is currently overseen by a separate contract with St. Mary’s Hospital by another member of our physician group.

Education Requirement:

Medical Degree (MD, DO) with BC/BE in Emergency Medicine (ABEM), as well as BC/BE in EMS or significant experience in medical direction of a medium sized EMS service. The candidate must be licensed in Colorado upon start date.

The Organization:

Colorado West Emergency Physicians is a very stable single hospital democratic group of 17 Emergency Department Physicians and 9 mid-level providers. St. Mary’s Hospital is the biggest hospital between Denver and Salt Lake City has the amenities of a private hospital but gets the patient load of, and functions as the “county” hospital.  We are a level 2 trauma center in designation, but function as a level 1 trauma center (we just don’t have neurosurgeons in house and don’t have fellows doing research).  Our unique location gets us referrals of the sickest echelon of medical and trauma patients from all over western Colorado and eastern Utah—so clinically a very stimulating practice.  Specialist coverage is complete and easy to access, making our job easier.  In summary, we get to see “big city” Emergency Medicine cases but live in a small town (50,000 in Grand Junction) with countless desirable outdoor activates possible within minutes of downtown. There is an expectation of enjoying and wanting to be a teacher and educator in joining our group: St. Mary’s family practice residents rotate through our ED, and we host two 3rd year medical students from the University of Colorado every 2 weeks between Labor Day and Memorial Day on their core Emergency medicine 3rd year rotation. We have the contract for Emergency Department services with the hospital, and have had this stability for more than 25 years. Despite national changes and uncertainties in healthcare, the contract is very secure.
