Mohawk Ambulance Service, the largest, privately-owned ambulance service in upstate New York, is currently looking for a Director of Operations. Mohawk Ambulance Service provides Basic Life Support and Advanced Life Support services to the counties of Albany, Schenectady, Rensselaer and Saratoga.


The Director of Operations will manage day to day field operations in conjunction with the Assistant Director of Operations, coordinate staff to assure that resource levels are maintained at adequate levels, make decisions about changing the scheduled resource levels on a current or upcoming shift, finalize the schedule including identifying each crew and assigned vehicle for the upcoming shift period, prepare the daily Operations Report prior to the start of business every day, address vehicle service issues and other operational issues, function as a clinical and operational resource to provide on-scene support to EMS crews involving high profile/high publicity and other large-scale EMS incidents, facilitate cooperation between the company's geographic service areas, EMS crews, and Communications to achieve high levels of performance, promote a culture of safety for all employees, patients, and stakeholders by implementing best safety practices, enforce company policy through effective communication, provide daily reports to the President on issues related to staffing, discipline, vehicle and operational issues as well as maintain and cultivate high-profile relationships with key stakeholders and officials.


The Director of Operations must have thorough knowledge of general principles of Emergency Medical Services operations, special documentation requirements related to insurance and billing, sufficient company resource levels, relevant patient care protocols at both the ALS and BLS levels, equipment carried on the company's EMS units, the capabilities of company EMS units that include operational and clinical limitations on interfacility transfers, both supervisory and training techniques, company operational policies and the capabilities of other company resources such as the ATS Division, NICU/PICU program, and SGT program.

The Director of Operations must have the ability to develop a functional rapport with patients, families, bystanders, company EMS crews and other agency representatives and clinical teams, maintain records, prepare reports, and compose correspondence (written and electronic) related to the work, communicate effectively and maintain favorable relations with the public and the company's stakeholders.


  • 5+ years’ prior personnel management or supervisory experience.

  • Prior business management experience.

  • Demonstrated proficiency at balancing operational needs, community relations/contract compliance, and fiscal responsibility with respect to the company's financial exposure.

  • Demonstrated prior experience with unit-hour utilization, on-time arrivals for facility discharges, effective audit of financial resources, overtime expenditures, as well as union grievances and matters taken to arbitration.
